PERSONAL VISION STATEMENT

A personal vision statement is your depiction of your life in the future. It is a vivid and inspirational description that creates a mental picture of where you ultimately want to be in life. I may be 10 years, 20 years, or even further in the future.

A vision statement is essentially a description of how you picture your future to be and about the person you want to be become. It describes your optimal desired future state. Its purpose is to give you direction and focus as you pursue your dreams and goals. It becomes the framework for the process of creating your life.

“Throughout the centuries, there were men who took first steps, down new roads, armed with nothing but their own vision.” – Ayn Rand

Why create a Personal Vision Statement

By creating a personal vision statement you design your ultimate destination with what is most important to you. You create a mental picture of where you what to be and what you want your life to be like years from now. You then use that statement for a focal point. You create a plan of action and set goals to make that vision a reality. If you do not create your own vision, others will plan and direct your life for you.

One of the great benefits of a statement is that it will guide your actions and behaviors so that you are staying on track to reach your desired destination. It also can be turned to when making major life decisions along the way.

Example: If you need to decide about taking a new job, you would review your vision statement to determine if the new position will get you closer to your vision. If your vision is centered on spending time with your family, but the new job will keep you away for a significant amount of time, it may not be the best job for you.

A vision statement is a great tool to help you;

  • focus your energy
  • guide your actions
  • stay in an optimistic mindset
  • set goals
  • make decisions
