Self Awareness

Self Awareness

Self Awareness is having an insightful understanding of our personality, values, tendencies, needs, and beliefs.  It is the process of analyzing our thoughts, beliefs, tendencies, and emotions to help us to determine our values and principles.  Acting on this knowledge allows us to reach our fullest potential and to become self-actualized.

Self awareness empowers the discovery process by enabling us to step away and examine the way we “see” ourselves.   As you develop self awareness, you are able to change your thoughts which in turn allow you to change your emotions, and ultimately change your actions.

“What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself.” ~Abraham Maslow

Self Awareness Process

Self Awareness happens through reflection.  You can have numerous experiences in your life, but still lack self awareness.  You need to take the time to step outside of your experiences and reflect on them.

Self-awareness is about knowing and understanding:

  • your beliefs and principles
  • your own emotions
  • what motivates you
  • your thinking patterns
  • your tendencies to react to certain situations
  • what you want out of life

“People travel to wonder at the height of the mountains, at the huge waves of the seas, at the long course of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars, and yet they pass by themselves without wondering.”  – St. Augustine
