Conflicts and disagreements are natural aspects of our lives.  They can occur whenever two or more people interact.  Because people have their own feeling and perceptions on issues, conflict naturally occurs when contradictory viewpoints meet.  Not all varying perspectives involve significant conflict where there is a need for intervention or involvement by another party to help reach a mutual agreement.  However, there are times when two of more individuals have opposing perspectives where they themselves can not come to a mutual or satisfactory agreement, and conflict resolution is necessary.

Learning how to successfully deal with these conflicts and disagreements in a healthy and constructive way is crucial.   When handled in an amicable and positive way, conflict can provide an opportunity for personal growth and the strengthening the relationships between individuals.

The Problem Solving process

The best way to attack a problem is to view the problem is an opportunity for improvement.  It is helpful to have a structure to follow to make sure that nothing is overlooked.  The problem solving process consists of a sequence of steps when correctly followed most often leads to a successful solution.

The first steps involve defining and analyzing the problem to be solved.  The best way to define the problem is to write down a concise statement which summarizes the problem, and then write down where you want to be after the problem has been resolved.  The next steps involve generating and analyzing potential solutions for the problem.  The final steps involve selecting and implementing the best course of action.  It is always recommended to evaluate the solution after it is implemented.

Decision-Making

Decision Making

Decision-making

Decision-making is a process that involves the collection and analysis of information that results in the selection of a course of action among several alternatives.  Effective decision-making may require a great deal of time, energy, thought, and information.  But hopefully, the process produces a final choice that will be the best one to produce the desired results.

People make decisions of varying importance every day.  A decision is simply a choice between two or more alternatives.  If we only have one alternative, we do not have a decision.  Some of those decisions we make require very little thought such as choosing what to have for lunch or what shirt to wear.  However, other decisions require much more thought such as which house to purchase or which college to attend.

Most people use some type of decision-making method when making bigger decisions on matters of importance or consequence.  Although the process takes time and effort, the benefit is that the process sufficiently reduces uncertainty and doubt about alternatives to allow a reasonable choice to be made.

The Decision Making Process

The decision making process is a systematic approach which includes several steps.  The process begins by defining the issues which needs a decision and determining what the decision should achieve.  Information is then gathered and analyzed in order to develop alternative options.  Finally, the alternatives are evaluated and a decision is made.

The steps for effective decision making are:

  1. Define and clarify the issue
  2. Determine the desired goal and outcome
  3. Gather all the facts and information
  4. Analyze the information
  5. Develop alternatives by thinking about or brainstorming possible options and solutions.
  6. Evaluate alternative options – consider and compare the pros and cons of each option
  7. Select the best option
  8. Implement the choice
  9. Evaluate the decision

We provide strategies and tools to help you make better decisions with tools and techniques for making timely and sound decisions including a SWOT analysis, Risk analysis, and decision making matrix.

Skill Enhancement Plan

Skill Enhancement Plan

A skill assessment is an integral part of any development process.  Before anyone can determine what they should improve, they first must assess their current skill levels as they relate to performance.  By first assessing your skill level, you will know where deficiencies may lie and what opportunities exist for improvement.

You should begin by reviewing a list of skills and assess your level of mastery of those particular skills or competencies.  After reviewing the list, list those skills or competencies that would most benefit from additional development.  You may select to further develop a current strength or you may decide to address a developmental need.

After you determine which skill(s) to address, create a written development plan (Skill Enhancement Plan) that outlines the course of action you will take to accomplish your objectives.  Include the benefits of enhancing this skill.  Also, indicate expected completion dates for each action or activity.  By doing so, the plan will provide a clear road map for improved performance.
