Four Phases of Personal Development
Personal Development begins with self-discovery. You first must find out where you are in order to move on from there. Self-Discovery allows you to gain a deep understanding of your own self, character, needs, values, and purpose in life. It also allows you to be more aware of your interests, hopes, dreams, and potential. Self-discovery involves taking time to deeply reflect on who you are, what you want to achieve, and the person you want to become.
After you discover who you are and where you are headed, you begin the self-development process by assessing your current skills and competencies. This involves gathering information about your aptitude, skills, competencies, and talents and critically reviewing them. This leads to the accumulation of self-knowledge. With self-knowledge you can understand your strengths, as well as identify areas where you would like to make improvements. It basically gives you the information needed to begin self-development.
About the Four Phases of Personal Development
Self-Development is the process of developing specific aspects of your mind and body. It is the pursuit of personal growth by enhancing your physical and mental skills, competencies, talents, and knowledge in order to seek self-fulfillment and proactively reach your fullest potential. Self-development is the actions leading to self-mastery and self-actualization.
Self-mastery is the ability to recognize, understand, control, and make the most out of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self. It is gained thorough awareness, understanding, and control over thoughts, emotions, and actions. As your performance improves, your mastery of your skills and competencies also improve. As your skills improve, you achieve more and your self-confidence increases. An increased self-confidence leads to being happier and feeling more fulfilled in life. You ultimately reach self-actualization and realization of your full potential. As you reach self-actualization you are becoming everything that you are capable of becoming.
Self Assessment Process
Any improvement processes should begin with an assessment of the gap between the current state or condition and the desired future state or condition. Having an accurate sense of who you are and what skills and abilities you possess helps you decide what you should do to improve. The self assessment process will help reveal a skill’s gap that you may need to work on.
It is important to begin the self assessment process by first recognizing that you are separate from your perceived faults and that you are able to change them. Weaknesses and shortcomings do not exist as a person’s permanent qualities, therefore, they can be overcome through consciously addresses them. It is only when we are willing to address them directly that we are able to reach our full potential. It is our awareness of our weaknesses and our willingness to address them that helps facilitate the process of personal development.
While people’s values, beliefs, and principles remain fairly constant throughout his or her life, people’s abilities and competencies are constantly changing, growing, and developing. Therefore, it is necessary for everyone to re-assess themselves periodically in relation to their goals.
Self assessment is the process of gathering information about ones own aptitude, skills, competencies, and talents and critically reviewing the quality of his or her performance and abilities. Self-Assessment is different from self-awareness and self-discovery in that awareness and discovery is simply a recognition of something or knowing something exists. Assessment, on the other hand, is determining or measuring an amount, value, importance, extent, or rate of something. For example, you may be aware that your cup has water in it, however, you may not know the amount of water until you measure it.
Self-awareness increases your understanding of who we are, while self-assessment helps measure and gauge your skills and competencies in order to further develop them. For example, through self-awareness you may discover you enjoy playing soccer or singing. However, it is through self-assessment where you can determine the level of your skills and competencies in those areas.
Self-assessment also allows you to recognize your potential as well as what you have to do to achieve that potential. Through the self-assessment process, you not only recognize your strengths, but also measure, gauge and analyzes those strengths. The process also allows you to recognize and acknowledge your weaknesses to open yourself to addressing them to make us a better person.
After the completion of a self-assessment, you are better able to set and reach your goals. By knowing what specific skills you need to develop or work on, you are able to focus your attention on those skills and making yourself more proficient at them.
